What a night! It was truly wonderful and will go down as one of my all time favourites. Saw you again at WOMAD 2008, your sets with Nathan and then Martha were fabulous. And then of course was 2009, when me and the cling-ons were completely blown away; I get tingles just thinking about it – being there with all my loved ones watching one of the best gigs ever.</p> <p>Anyway, the reason I am writing is that I am a teacher at a Secondary school in deepest, darkest Somerset. We have a really mixed cohort, the kids are great and one of the best parts of my job is working with underachieving students, trying to get them to realise their potential. Often these are students whose aspirations and self belief are at rock bottom, with very low self esteem. I am trying to organise events that challenge and thought back to your Thursday evening performance with the kids from Malmsbury School. </p> <p>I know this is a long shot, you are obviously a very busy man (and talented – did I say that??), but I wondered if you would consider doing a workshop with some of our students. I have some kids in mind who really need to find their voice and I can’t think of a better way of doing that than beatboxing. Wow! I reckon you've heard it all before but I am completely gob-smacked!</p> <p>Now I don't want to get carried away and shower you with sycophantic praise but I am very curious about the way you do things. </p> <p>I guess the first question that springs to mind is what loop sampler do you use? Whatever you do, you seem to be able to use it with great spontaneity!</p> <p>The other thing I'm really curious about is the way you improvise these things. Is it entirely organic and on the spot or do you come to a show with a basic idea in your head and just improvise around it? </p> <p>The thing I find remarkable about that performance of "Shlomo's mouth" is the way you construct a layered piece out of multi-bar phrases perhaps 4 or more bars long. For something completely improvised on the spot it has richness of production that humbles a month long studio project! </p> <p>I guess the reason about the gear you use is because I'm tempted to get a hold of a Dynamic mic or three and a loop sampler and do some home improvisation with the kids! Missed half of Peter Gabriel in order to get to front of crowd and it was well worth it!! All of us agreed it was most entertaining thing at womad (and there is so much good stuff there). Lots of v excited kids in audience. We agreed that you should be doing a Jamie Oliver and it looks like you are already, so good for you. You are a natural teacher (we saw Malmesbury kids gig and workshop too). Brilliant for connecting lots of different people - Humour + music is an irresistible combination. We liked the smile that kept spreading across your face as if you couldn't believe how excited everyone was. Wish your projects all success, please keep working at opening kids minds to as many different kinds of music as poss, Britain puts music and people in boxes too much and kids learn early to close their minds. Charlie Winston (also at Womad) found the same thing and ended up in France. With only the knowledge of a couple of clips of the internet.<br /> My friend was at Glasto'08 this year and was totally blown away by this guy. So with the offer of some tickets we said yes...I included my boyfriend in this too, but he had NO idea about what shlomo was about, so was very unenthusiastic.<br /> The gig was very intimate, instantly making it even more jaw-dropping as you can hear everything, but still can't work out how he manages to make 3-4 or more sounds at once......breathtaking-quite literally.<br /> Shlo, is fantastic, but I have to say he came into his own with the 'vocal orchestra', he conducted them albeit in a 'retro' fashion,but how else could you conduct your beatboxers? The voices, harmonies, tone..I've got little musical knowledge, just my ears to say that, that was musical delight. My other half repeatedly said, "it was better than the orignals". He was blown away by the skills of bellatrix at the beginning and so was I, until each member had their own little highlight, showcasing their skills and then you felt like an atomic bomb had just blown up in your head. Testimount (think that is his name-couldn't hear through the clapping)gave the most amazing rap and looked like he thoroughly enjoyed it, in fact every member looked like they were out to have fun.<br /> With their obvious enjoyment, I was toe tapping, head bopping thigh slapping all the way through, until we got the chance to dance at the end (it always feels awkward at a sit down venue, to get up unannouced and dance blocking the views of the people on the front rows), which is what I wanted to do straight from the beginning.<br /> BIG UP TO YOU ALL!!!<br /> You are all awe-inspiring, and musical geniuses, who have brought the human form to play the most fantastic instruments that mother nature gave us, our voices. I just can't express enough how brilliant you all are. Bellatrix had a scratching match with Dj Yoda, that was f#@%ing brilliant!! She is totally inspirational to all!
